Examination of bestseller children's books published in 2000 and after in terms of vocabulary

The aim of this thesis is to examine 30 best-selling children's books published in 2000 and later in terms of proverbs, idioms, reduplications, onomatopoeia, reinforcement words, nicknames, filler words, terms, relationship words, tongue twisters and formulaic words, to determine the diversity and adequacy levels of vocabulary elements in children's books, to explain the contributions of children's books to children's language development and to offer suggestions. The basic qualitative research approach was adopted in the study and the document analysis method was used. The universe of the study consisted of children's books written for the 7-11 age group and written by Turkish authors in 2000 and later, and the sample of the study consisted of 30 best-selling children's books written for 7-11 age primary school children in Turkey and published between 2001-2023. The data of the study were collected from best-selling children's books published between 2001-2023 and analyzed using the content analysis technique according to vocabulary elements as a result of the scan conducted on Kitapyurdu, a book sales site that includes book sales rates. As a result of the study, it was seen that proverbs were given less place than other vocabulary elements in the examined children's books. It was concluded that idioms and reduplications were the most common vocabulary elements in the examined books, tongue twisters were given less place than expected, and other vocabulary elements were at an acceptable level.
