Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to explore the sources of realism in the contemporary Syrian novel after 2015, in light of the tragedy and war. Realism is a doctrine that originated in the West and has had a clear influence on Arabic literature in general. Most writers have tended to depict life with its misery, hardship, wars, customs, and traditions, as well as its blessings and prosperity. Arab writers, especially in Syria, have been able to convey the subtleties of this reality to a great extent. This study addresses the topic of realism in the novels of Syrian writers by examining a group of the most famous novels written during the Syrian revolution, representing various forms of realism: the countryside, the city, the homeland, exile, the diaspora, asylum, and so on. These novels present - almost - different narrative experiences of Syrian writers, as they are limited in time between 2015 and 2023, which gives a nearly complete picture of the patterns of realism and their connotations in his novels. In this thesis, I followed a methodology based on description and analysis, through which I concluded that the contemporary Syrian writer was able to employ the features of realism accurately and convincingly in conveying his ideas and the concerns of his people and presenting them to the Arab reader in a realistic and accurate manner.
