Evaluation of 9-12 years old students'paintings from the point of cultural and artistic values

Children use their thoughts and feelings while reflecting them to the painting. It reveals their iner world and painting is a tool for them for an expression. Usage in the paintings are generally plain and simple. It is thought that children paintings are the mirror of their inner world. Many researches have been made from this point of view. In this study; figurative values, family concept and cultural values are tried to be evaluated. 7-14 age, 1161 primary and secondary students'pictures are gathered for the study. All of the students are from centre, county or town of Trabzon. The targeted study is limited to 250 randomly chosen paintings that are questionairred of 9-12 years old students. The survey study is prepared in 3 categories (figurative, artistic and cultural) by using Goodenough Harris drawing test in order to evaluate the students' feelings, ideas and mental skills. 56 survey quesions are presented to the Black Sea Technical University, Fatih Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts academsits' opinions. Then, these questions are reduced to 36, 16 of them figurative, 10 of them artistic and 10 of them are about cultural aspects. Students' pictures are evaluated according to these 36 prepared questions. Students are asked to do paintings about thier family, beloved teacher, friends and their immediate environments. 20 package of IBM SPSS( The Statistical packet for Social Sciences) are used. In the survey; frequency (f), percentage (%), standard deviation (sd), t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) are used. Odds ratio is calculated and comparison is made between the age groups. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and POST HOC tests are applied while doing the comparison between the classrooms and schools. Significance level between the differences of variables is P < 0,05. Following the searches, children do paintings according to their gender, girls are more succesful than boys and artistic values are increasing in accordance to the students' age. In addition, it is observed that students in urban areas are more succesful than students in rural areas. Key Words: Figure, Art, Culture, Values,Environment, Child and Drawing
