The importance of determining etiological subtypes for acute arterial infarcts is well known. Two commonly used systems for classifying subtypes of infarcts are the TOAST(Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment) which divides infarcts by etiology and The Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project (OCSP) calssification which classifies infarcts topographically. Because of the high mortality and morbidity rates associated with stroke and the fact that stroke is the second death cause protective and preventive therapeutical approaches are of crucial importance. The file records of patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of ischemic stroke between the January 1st 2012- December 31st 2013 at the Akdeniz university hospital department of neurology were examined. Patients were classified according to the OCSP and TOAST classifications and the relation between the presence of risk factors for ischemic stroke , infarct localisation and size , CRP and ESR values, the length of hospital stay ,complications whitin these stroke subgroups were assessed. Morbidity was significantly higher in the cardioembolic stroke and TACI groups. We suggest that determining stroke subgrops is important in order to determine prognosis and taking measures that would affect outcome.
