SUMMARY The Effect on the Pulp and Paper Properties of Modified Sulfate Process with Ethanol and Ethylene Glycol by Using or not Using Anthraquinone In this study, the addition of ethanol and ethylene glycol to the conventional sulfate pulping media was examined on the sulfate pulps and papermaking properties. Ethanol and ethylene glycol addition to the sulfate cooking liquor was varied 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% percents. The anthraquinone was added 0.5% percent at the same pulping conditions and 8 trials were also made. When the ethanol ratio was increased, it was determined that ethanol adding to cooking has little effect in pulp yield and a significant impact on the delignification rate. Significantly, lower viscosity contents occured for pulps obtained from the solvent-sulfate pulping in which the ethanol ratios varied from 10 to 40. During the trials, anthraquinone adding to the solvent-sulfate pulping media were made an affirmative effect in the pulp yield, on the dehgnification rate, and decreased viscosity. An increase in tear index and brightness values in sulfate-ethanol pulps is shown, whereas no effect in breaking length and burst properties. In anthraquinone addition to sulfate-ethanol pulps, the higher breaking length, burst and tear index of handsheets were found comparing to the sulfate pulps, with the possible exception of brightness. When the adding ethylene glycol to the sulfate cooking were found a catalytic affirmative effect in pulp yield and viscosity, with the possible exception of the delignification rate. On the other hand, anthraquinone addition to the sulfate-ethylene glycol pulping media was increased the delignification rate and viscosity. All the mechanic and physical properties of sulfate-ethylene glycol pulp handsheets were exhibited positive effects with the adding anthraquinone and ethylene glycol. In the same way, a considerably increase in breaking length, brightness values was obtained but had lower burst and tear strength than the control pulp. As a result, pulp and papermaking properties of addition of the ethylene glycol to the sulfate cooking were observed to be better than those of the ethanol to the sulfate cooking.
