Abstract (EN)

Obesity in adolescence which is one of the fastest periods of body development can cause humiliation, social exclusion and embarrassment and can affect the child's school achievement and attitudes towards social relations and physical activity. Therefore, it is very important to determine the factors affecting the formation of obesity, to solve the health problems that may develop during adolescence and to take necessary precautions. Thus, we aimed to retrospectively investigate the relationship between the body composition and the thyroid hormone levels which plays a role in obesity development in obese children. Between January 2016 and December 2016, 126 children aged 13-18 years who underwent bioelectrical impedance analysis measurements and whose hormone and biochemical parameters were measured at Batman Regional State Hospital Diet Policlinic on the same day were examined retrospectively. Obesity status of children, demographic characteristics, body composition values including muscle, bone and fat weight, fat content and basal metabolic rate, blood parameter levels including serum free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and ferritin levels were examined. Obese children had significantly higher total cholesterol, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein levels than normal weight and overweight children. The control group's fT3 levels are significantly lower than the other two groups; TSH levels in the control group were significantly lower than those in obese children. It has been found that serum fT3 levels of children were significantly positive correlation with body mass index, fat weight and fat percentage values and negative correlation height, weight, body mass, and activity calorie values. Relationships between the thyroid hormone levels of children and body composition parameters prove that thyroid hormones are effective in the development of obesity in children. However, we need to enlighten how these hormones shape the body composition changes and how the body composition and thyroid hormone relation can contribute to the obstruction of childhood obesity and obesity-related complications with the help of cellular, experimental and clinical studies.
