Abstract (EN)

Since the first years of its use, glass has been used in optics, construction, laboratory, automobile, aircraft, remote industry and many other fields, rather than just a household item with the developing technology. With the expansion of the use of glass, the need to improve the mechanical properties of glass has emerged. For this reason, studies on improving the mechanical properties of glass are increasing day by day. The surface properties of glasses determine their mechanical strength. Chemical, thermal and mechanical factors cause crack formation on the surface. Research on improving the strength of glass is aimed at creating compressive stresses on the surface of glasses that can prevent the formation, propagation and growth of cracks. In addition to thermal tempering, which is the most frequently used application in this regard, chemical tempering, which has been in our lives for 50 years, has also become the focus. Chemical tempering is an ion exchange application based on the replacement of small diameter sodium ions in the structure of the glass immersed in the molten salt bath with large scale potassium ions in the molten salt. Large-diameter ions that pass into the glass structure create a compressive stress on the surface, improving the strength of the glass. In this thesis, it is aimed to improve the mechanical properties of borosilicate glass by chemical tempering process. 4 different temperatures and 3 different hours for each temperature were determined and parameters such as processing temperature and processing time were compared to determine the option with the most efficient increase in strength. The hardness, optical properties and bending strength of reference samples and treated glasses were examined and their concentration profiles were determined and compared and evaluated. As a result of the studies, in glass samples with ion exchange process; It was observed that the concentration depth increased with increasing temperature and time. There is no effect of ion exchange on its optical properties. Both the hardness value and the flexural strength values increased up to a certain value with the increase in time and temperature, and then decreased.
