Abstract (EN)
This case study was conducted in order to observe and investigate the implementation of critical reading strategies (CRS) in reading classes at the School of Foreign Languages at Hasan Kalyoncu University, Gaziantep, Turkey. The purpose of the study was to find out the teacher and student perceived benefits of critical reading strategies. The data was collected through the teacher and the student diaries in the reading courses at the School of Foreign Languages at Hasan Kalyoncu University. The study was conducted with 20 upper-intermediate students for 6 weeks. During the study, the students practiced five critical reading strategies: previewing, annotating, summarizing, contextualizing, questioning to understand and remember and analyzing/evaluating strategies. Some authentic articles and texts from the students' reading course book, Pathways (2013), were used when practicing these critical reading strategies. The data of the study was analyzed descriptively. The findings indicated that training the students in the use of critical reading strategies help students to learn how to approach and deal with any reading text and it helps them to learn how to approach academic writing.
