Abstract (EN)
Glocalization is a process through which global and local cultural elements mutually interact and transform. It challenges the notion of globalization as a one-way homogenizing force by emphasizing that local identities are re-produced, reshaped, and often show resistance within global contexts. The glocalization approach asserts that cultural products do not dissolve into a uniform global structure but rather gain new meanings by integrating with local contexts. In this regard, media products and visual narratives are among the most visible examples of glocalization. This study aims to examine the position of Japanese manga comics within global circulation through the lens of glocalization theory. Considered a product of cultural globalization, mangas not only incorporate Japanese cultural symbols but are also reinterpreted in various societies by blending with local cultural elements, thereby acquiring a glocal character. The research highlights that glocalization is not merely about preserving the local in the face of the global, but rather about the dynamic transformation born from their interaction. Adopting a qualitative methodology, the study analyzes cultural representations, symbolic interaction forms, and visual storytelling strategies through selected manga works such as Astro Boy, Captain Tsubasa, Akira, Dragon Ball, and Pokémon. These works are found to reflect not only the values of Japanese society but also offer a common narrative platform consumed on a global scale. With the influence of media technologies and distribution strategies, manga narratives are received differently across geographies, leading to the evolution of manga culture into a multi-centered structure. Manga comics are thus regarded as narratives that embody the principles of cultural plurality, hybridity, and interaction characteristic of glocalization. In this context, the study aims to contribute not only to manga-specific literature but also to researchers interested in the intersection of visual culture, media, design, and cultural theory.
