Sustainable approaches for children's furniture design

Sustainability is an increasingly important issue in recent years and provides continuity in all areas of life. Sustainabile design allows for a more sustainable way of meeting the user's needs with the product's entire life cycle If the user is a child, it should be considered that the design is more carefully shaped and while the child's furniture is designed, it should not be overlooked that the correct physical environment supports the child's physical, cognitive and psychological well-being. For this reason, children's furniture design is a subject that needs to be considered in terms of sustainability in order to increase the product value, to make more efficient use, to create a healthy environment for the child and to minimize the environmental effects of the product. In this study, it is aimed to present sustainability approaches in the design of children's furniture and within the scope of the study children's furniture from 0 to 12 years are analyzed. . This work was carried out in two stages as conceptual study and analysis of sustainable children's furniture. In the conceptual study, baby, child, furniture and sustainable furniture notions were established by survey technique and it was determined how could furniture be designed according to baby and child concepts. And also furniture design considerations related to notions were determined. Within the scope of the analysis of sustainable children's furniture, ID cards of 120 furniture identified by using conceptual work were created. Furnishings were analyzed according to the sustainable design considerations revealed in the conceptual study and in the literature study. The results of the examinations were made on the analysis tables which includes all the furnitures. Functional notions have come to the forefront according to the findings of the conceptual study and notions about distribution and waste management were not reached in this work. Analysis of children's furniture according to sustainable design considerations has shown that the sustainability approach in children's furniture starts from the design stage of the furniture and needs to be addressed in the life cycle and sustainable furniture poses no threat to the environment, and also it contributes to child's physical, mental and psychological development.
