An investigation on growing kiwifruit vines in Eastern Black Sea Region

SUMMARY This study evaluated, the Kiwi orchards extending from Sarp to Ordu regions. 40 orchards in the study Eastern Black Sea region have been included in this investigation. Areas of Kiwi orchards range between 20-6000 m2 and a number of the kiwifruit vines appeared between 5-150. Physiographic characteristics of the orchards, such as exposure, slope, altitude were ascertained for training can affect the productivity significantly, it was necessary to establish the nature of the training material, shape, height, distance and extension direction of training system. Kiwifruits are dioik, that is, masculinity and femininity occur on different individuals. Thus, the characteristics and specifications necessary to be established have included number of kiwifruit vines, distribution of female and male individuals, age, places and year the vines had been obtained, spacing, plantation technique, fruit productivity, survival percentage. Also, soil texture and pH values were ascertained through soil analyses. Kiwi cuttings, obtained from Yomra, Pelitli and Kendirli, were treated with 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 mg/lt IBA hormones in order to stimulate rooting, and were planted on 3 lines with 3 repetition in each line. 3 lines of control group were also added. Rooting environment for all cuttings consisted of the mixture of forest soil + river sand + perlite. Kiwi seeds obtained from the fruits of Zafanos and Rize origin were sowed in November and April. This work was conducted to find out the germination time and root structure of the kiwifruit vines grown by seeding.
