The relationship between parent-adolescent relationship quality and parental self-compassion levels with adolescents' resilience and self-regulation skills

Adolescence is a period in which many changes are experienced at a time when adolescents leave childhood and prepare for adulthood. Experiencing changes can affect the adolescent psychologically and behaviorally. Factors that can prevent adolescents from experiencing psychological and behavioral problems or help them reduce their problems have been the subject of research. When we look at the literature, there are studies that show that parents' self-compassion and parent-adolescent relationship have a positive effect on adolescents' mental health. At the same time, there are studies in which psychological resilience and self-regulation skills have positive and protective effects on adolescents' mental health and development. In this study, a total of 914 people, 457 adolescents and 457 parents, studying at 3 Anatolian High Schools affiliated to the İzmir Provincial Directorate of National Education, were included in order to examine the parent-adolescent relationship quality and parental self- compassion levels in terms of their relationship with the psychological resilience and self- regulation skills of adolescents. 'Self-Compassion Scale', 'Child and Adolescent Psychological Resilience Scale (CYRM-12)', 'Adolescent Self- Regulation Skills Scale', Parent-Adolescent Relationship Quality Scale' and 'Demographic Information Form' were used. Data were analyzed using the SPSS program. In this study, descriptive statistics were used to examine the demographic variables, One-Way ANOVA and the t test were used to examine the significance of the differences between groups. Before the analysis, the normality of the distributions was examined on the basis of each scale and its sub-dimensions, and the data were checked for extreme values. In order to examine the sub-objectives of this study, Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to examine the relationships between the variables. According to the findings obtained from the research, Parent-Adolescent Relationship Quality, Parental Self-Compassion Levels, Adolescent Psychological Resilience and Adolescent Self-Regulation Skills differ according to the parent's gender, income status and the adolescent's gender. As a result of the Pearson Correlation analysis, a significant relationship was found between the Psychological Resilience Scale and the Self-Compassion sub-dimensions and the Parent-Adolescent Relationship Quality sub-dimensions. It was found that Parental Self-Compassion Levels and Parent-Adolescent Relationship Quality significantly predicted Adolescent Psychological Resilience Levels and Adolescent Self-Regulation Skills. As a result, resilience and self- regulation skills are factors that affect the mental health of adolescents, it is thought that this study will be productive to increase adolescents' resilience and self-regulation skills. The contribution of all these findings to the literature is discussed.
