Effects of parental control behaviors on adolescents self regulation and emotional problems

Self regulation can be briefly described as one's capacity to modify his or her feelings, behaviors and thoughts. This study was designed to understand how parental control effects self regulation and whether or not parental control plays a role in adolescents emotional problems. Along with this purpose, Adolescence Self Regulation Inventory, Parental Psychological Control Inventory, Parental Behavioral Control Inventory and Strength And Difficulties Inventory were administerden to 219 male adolescents, attending 6th, 7th, and 8th classes. As a result, two dimentions of parental psychological control perceived by adolescents predict adolescents emotional problems by the partial mediation effect of adolescents self regulation abilities. A ccording to fathers data, while Guilt Induction, which is a psychological control dimention, predict adolescents emotional problems by the full mediation effect of self regulation abilities, Love Withdrawal dimention predict emotional problems by the partial effect of the self regulation abilities. Again, according to fathers data, Monitoring, which is a behavioral control dimention, predict adolescents emotional problems by the full mediation effect of self regulation abilities.
