Abstract (EN)
This study aimed to examine whether the emotion regulation of children attending preschool education and the parenting styles of their parents differ according to sociodemographic variables and the relationship between emotion regulation and parenting styles. The study used the relational screening model, one of the quantitative research methods. The study group consisted of a total of 226 children receiving education in kindergartens affiliated with the National Education Directorate in the Etimesgut and Sincan districts of Ankara. Data for the study were collected from a total of 452 parents, including mothers (N=226) and fathers (N=226) of the children. In the study, the "Demographic Information Form" prepared by the researcher was used to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of the children and their families, the "Emotion Regulation Scale" was used to determine the emotion regulation skill levels of the children, and the "Parenting Styles and Dimensions Scale" was used to determine the parenting styles of the children's parents. Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation techniques and independent variable t-test, ANOVA and LSD test were used to analyze the data. As a result of the study, a positive and significant relationship was found between the authoritative parenting style of both parents and the emotion regulation sub-dimension of the children, and a negative and significant relationship was found between the negativity sub-dimension. In addition, negative and significant relationship was found between the authoritarian parenting style of both parents and the emotion regulation sub-dimension of the children, and a positive and significant relationship was found between the negativity sub-dimension. There was no significant relationship between the permissive parenting style of fathers and the emotion regulation sub-dimension, while a positive and significant relationship was found between the negativity sub-dimension. There was a negative and significant relationship between the permissive parenting style of mothers and the emotion regulation sub-dimension of children, and a positive and significant relationship between the negativity sub-dimension. According to these findings, it was determined that the children of parents who adopted a authoritative parenting style had higher emotion regulation skills. The research results were discussed within the framework of the literature and suggestions were presented.
