Study of Ankara urban banks in the context of outdoor design features for the disabled

The public parks are the public areas where the recreation needs of the dwellers of the basic requirements are met, but they are also the areas of the disabled with the right of usage as well as the unobstructed.The purpose of the thesis is to contribute to the public spaces and parks to become unobstructed by determining the outdoor design principles and standards for the disabled. With this purpose, some of the public parks of Ankara, Capital o our country, have been selected and examined for the compliance to the use of disabled people.The study consists of five sections. In the first section, the importance of public spaces and public parks as public space and the disability of the physical environment of our country have been mentioned, it has also been emphasized that the public spaces and public parks shall be arranged and made suitable for the disabled poulation as well as people without any disability.In the second section, a huge source information is shown including the definitions and types of disability, statistics about the disabled people, the legal regulations and universal rights, prescribed standards for the disabled to use the urban spaces.Materials as the basis of the thesis and the examination methods of the parks selected as the study area in terms of the disabled. The methodology of the thesis is based on the observation of field research, documentation, evaluation of the parks in terms of disabled standards, surveys devoted to the disabled people and the use of public spaces and parks and analysis and interpretation of the survey data SPSS 9.0 software package.In the fourth chapter, selected public parks are examined in terms of disabled standards. The surveys with people with disabilities living in the city of Ankara and and its consequences are included in this section in depth.In the conclusion part of the study, the problems the disabled people experience in the public parks, the compability of the public parks selected as the research areas to the use of the disabled people and the results of the questionnaire were evaluated gregariously.Key words: Public Parks in Ankara, Disability, Accessible Parks, Public Space, Urban Parks
