Abstract (EN)

Sounds are inseperable parts of cities. The sounds of the city, like their appearance, change over time. The turning point of the changes in the acoustic environments of the cities is the factories established with the industrialization movement. [1] These factory areas, which did become effective on the progress of the city and are labeled as industrial heritage today, play an important role on the composition of the city's identity. As a part of the urban identity, the sounds of the city changed during the industrialization process and new sounds were added to the acoustic environment of the city. The process of industrialization, which has direct effects on the formation of urban sonic identity, should be examined in many areas as well as its effects on urban acoustics. This multi-faceted assessment, which requires a comprehensive assessment of the relations between sound sources, receiver and urban environment from the past to the present, is possible with the soundscape approach. The soundscape is the evaluation of interaction between multiple sound sources and the environment independent of positive or negative judgments. [2] Determination of the effects of industrial heritage buildings on city acoustics with soundscape approach, documentation and protection of them as acoustic heritage is necessary. Because the sounds that every city has are unique to that city. The sonic identities of cities are part of urban identities. Eskişehir started its industrialization process with the opening of Baghdad-Berlin Railway in 1894 and continued after the proclamation of the Republic and became an industrial center during the period. Due to the lack of research on the effects of these industrial heritage buildings on the acoustic environment of the city, which are an important part of Eskişehir urban identity, a comprehensive thesis was prepared on the importance, transformation and effects of Eskişehir industrial heritage buildings in the city's soundscape. In this thesis, the sounds that the factory structures and the railroads in Eskişehir incorporated to the city, the auditory identity gained by the region with these sounds, their place in the urban identity and the transformations it undergoes are revealed through archival browsing, interviews and surveys. Thus, it has been concluded that the areas that are considered as industrial heritage have an important place in shaping the urban soundscape, and that the intangible elements such as sounds that are a part of the regional identity should be protected and sustained.
