Fire in historical wooden buildings

The fact that public foundations and institutions and private property owners do not have the awareness of preserving the society?s cultural assets gives the signals of an incontrovertible process which will eventually end in a total disappearance of historical wooden buildings, the number of which continues to decrease rapidly. In my thesis study, I laid down the reasons for breaking out of the phenomenon of fire, which is an important player in this process, in historical wooden buildings and analyzed the measures which can be taken. Within this context, I made a definition of wooden building material and examined its behavior in the face of heat by setting out from its physical, chemical and mechanical features. I concluded the first part by analyzing the tradition of wooden buildings in our country and the world.I presented the theoretical and practical aspects in the second part of my study to the phenomenon of fire and tried to present subjects such as burning, types of fire and fire stages in indoor spaces.I started the third and last part by approaching traditional plan types, traditional wooden building elements, traditional room arrangement and wooden building urban architectural sites in terms of fire. In this last part, I concluded my study under the title of conclusion and suggestions by discussing classical and system approaches in terms of fire safety, how latest technology fire extinguishing systems and protective chemical substances should be applied in historical wooden buildings with positive and negative examples.It is obvious that cultural assets are values entrusted to us by future generations and it will be difficult to transfer this treasure even to the next century unless an awareness of preservation is formed.
