Event modality in Khwarezm Turkish

While language studies have a long history, the study of modality is a relatively recent topic. In Western linguistics, systematic modality studies first emerged in the latter part of the 20th century. However, modality studies have become more popular in Turkish for the past ten years. This study aims to contribute to the semantic map of Turkish by analyzing the event modality in Khwarezm Turkish. The first chapter of the study, the Theoretical Framework, looks at how modality is treated in linguistics and philosophy, the chapter also defines the modality term and explains the relations of modality with 'modal', 'tense', and 'aspect' are also explained. The chapter on the Khwarezm Turkish Period and Studies gives information on the texts and about the period that will be the focus of modality tagging. These texts are: Nehcü'l-Ferâdîs, Husrev ü Şîrîn, Mukaddimetü'l-Edeb, Kısasü'l-Enbiyâ, Mu'înü'l-Mürîd, Harezm Türkçesi Kur'ân Tercümesi, Mirâc-nâme. The third chapter of the study, Event Modality in Khwarezm Turkish, provides a detailed analysis of the mentioned event modalities organized under subheadings based on Palmer's (2001) and Aslan Demir's (2008) classifications. This study aims to provide a better understanding framework of the texts of Khwarezm Turkish, identify the modal functions of the affixes in Khwarezm Turkish, and compare Khwarezm Turkish and Turkish in terms of verb modality markers for future research. In this sense, this study determines the boundaries and all verb modality markers in Khwarezm Turkish through the texts of the time. This conclusion was drawn from the data from the source books, which were grouped according to the different kinds of modalities. The collected data were then subjected to one of the qualitative research methods, categorical content analysis, a qualitative data analysis technique. Two categories are used to analyze the modality of events in Khwarezm Turkish: Deontic and Dynamic. The deontic modality is subdivided into the following subheadings: obligative (weak obligative and strong obligative), permissive (optional, non-optional), and requestive (commissive, request, entreaty). The dynamic modality is subdivided into the following subheadings: abilitive (physical ability and mental ability), necessitative and volitive. All subheadings have been analyzed according to markers that correlate syntax-lexicology-morphology, morpho-syntactic, lexical (modal verbs, modal nouns, and auxiliary modal words), and morphemic markers.
