Examination of secondary school 7th students with mathematics course grade 5 using number sense strategies

This research was carried out in order to find an answer to the question of "examining the use of number sense strategies of secondary school 7th grade students with a mathematics course grade of 5?"The method of the research was determined as a special case study method.The sample of the study consists of 85 seventh grade students with a average point of 5 in sixth grade and studying in Kaman district of Kırşehir province in the 2021-2022 academic year. Purposive sampling method was used in the selection of the students participating in the study and Students who volunteered to participate in the study were included in the study. The research data were collected with the number sense scale developed by Suphi Önder BÜTÜNER. As a result, the students tended to solve the given problems based on the rules. In particular, none of the students produced solutions based on number sense in the given 8 problems. On the other hand, interviews were held with 3 students, 1 student from each school, by interviewing the teachers among 85 students with a mathematics grade of 5 whose solutions for 10 questions were taken and as a result of these interviews, one student stated that these types of questions were solved in the classroom, but the solution was done in a rule-based way. Also the student stated that only one student used the number sense strategy in solving first question, but this student also stated there is a rule-based teaching in the classroom.
