The journal of Mecmûa-i Fünûn ( Analyses, short summeriesof the contents and selected texts )

In this study, the aim of which is to read adn examine the journal Mecmûa-i Fünûn (1862-1883), which is of great significance when Turkish science and culture history is concerned, and thereby to contribute scholars with the results, the journal is introduced by preparing an analytical index. As it can be easily inferred from the index, it is possible to see scientist and statesmen such as Münif Paşa, Âli Paşa, Ethem Pertev Paşa, Kadri Bey, Mehmet Cemil Paşa, Halil Kâmil Paşa, Ebûbekir Efendi, Muhammed Şevki, Bekir Sıtkı Efendi, Ahmet Rıfat Bey, Aziz Bey in the journal. In the following section, the index of the articles published in the journal is given with respect to their issue number in order that the texts in the journal can be examined as a whole. In another section, columns, short columns, essays and other types of texts are listed according to both the name of their writer and that of the work so that the writers wrote for the journal or the works in it can be clearly identified. In the next section, texts chosen from the journal, mostly articles, are translated into Latin-originated Turkish Alphabet. While translating the texts into today's alphabet, a great effort has been spent to protect the originality. In the journal, the punctiation is made by us apart from the commas(.) and (:)'s colons in order to provide an easily comprehensible meaning. The texts chosen, which are articles, short columns, essays, critisizms, conversations, charter, preface, notices, texts about language structure, have the quality to reflect the science and culture world of the period they were issued. hi the final section, some informations are given about Münif Paşa, who is one of the pioneers of modem science and aducation in Turkey, who contributed a lot to the birth of the journal and to maintain it's life and who is one of the most significant intellectuals of that area. And there is some information about the scientific organisation Cemiyet-i ilmiye-i Osmaniye which published the journal, as well. vm
