Abstract (EN)

Breast cancer is the most comman side-specifical malignancy among women. In this type of cancer and especially in early stage in which the effective treatment is surgey, BCT has been taking the place of mastectomy. In the 30-60% of the patients who had BCT, re-excision is required for the recurrent disease. To determine the factors associated with the re-excision or re-operations, between 07.09.2005-30.11.2011, in the Akdeniz University Medical Faculty Department of General Surgery, patients who had BCT (lumpectomy and axillary lymph node disection) and then re-excision or mastectomy for the positive surgical margins in post-operative periyod were examined retrospectively. Dates about patient and tumor achieved from the patient?s folder were analyzed. In our study, the rate of re-operations for positive surgical margins were found as 36%. Re-excision rate was determinated approximately 15% and mastectomi rate was approximately 21%. Young patient, larger tumor size, LVI and axillary lymph node metastases, presence of extensive ıntraductal component and multifocality were found to be associated with increased re-excision rate.In conclusion, in the treatment of breast cancer, patient should be informed about treatment alternatives and larger surgical excisions should be preferred in the patients who are young, have extensive intraductal component, LVI and axillary lymph node metastases. Patients who have BCT and have the features mentioned above should be tould about the increaed requirement of re-excisions.Key words: Breast conservatig surgery, re-excision, early stage breast cancer.
