Abstract (TR)

Metamaterials are subwavelength structures that exhibit idiosyncratic behavior at a narrow resonance band. The characteristics of such devices can be engineered and tuned based on the application of interest. The resonant narrow-band nature of these structures renders them very desirable for many applications such as sensors and spectroscopy techniques where a high light-matter interaction is required or Magnetic resonance imaging, which operates in a very narrow-band Radio-Frequency range. Here, we focus on investigating the structure and design of metamaterials and metamaterial-inspired structures and their applications in biomedical engineering. We start with metamaterials that operate in the Radiofrequency range of the electromagnetic spectrum and show the possible applications in magnetic resonance imaging. Then, we increase the resonance to the Ultrahigh Frequency and demonstrate its application as a low-cost and effective dielectric microfluidic sensor. We demonstrate this by integrating cost-effective microfluidic systems such as paper-based and PCB-based microfluidics with metamaterial-based structures. Finally, utilizing microfabrication techniques, we push the resonance frequency of the design beyond the electronics domain and toward the Terahertz frequencies. As the THz field grows, an ever-growing need for optical components for THz radiation forms. We demonstrate an efficient plasmonic metamaterial using high-quality factor Fano resonance. Then, by manipulation of the structural parameter, we tune the fano resonance to obtain electromagnetically induced transparency that has applications in sensing and slow-light applications. The systems introduced in this work can be developed into sensing kits with direct applications in the biomedical engineering field.
