Abstract (EN)
The district Giresun is a settlement of Balıkesir which is the central town of Karesi district during the period of Ottoman Empire according to the govermental settlement. With the eruption of the war of independence in West Anatolia on 15th May, 1999 by the invasion of İzmir; Balıkesir was also affected directly by the events. In this period, some deputies were delegated to Balıkesir congresses and a Turkish revolutionaries committee was organized.After the Greek invasion spreaded towards İzmir-North direction, a front line from Akhisar to Ayvalık was built up. The supply center of the front Soma centered in that front line is the district Giresun. Our forces in the fronts of Akhisar and Soma were defeated by the Greek invasion which was erupted on 22nd July ,1920 in İzmir against Greek movement, Giresun wars happened in Çomaklı site which is on the North of the district; however because of our forces? being defeated again , they fell back towards the east of Bursa .In the period of invasion, the public of the district kept helping for the war of independence. Therefore because of the contributions of the people there and because of the wars occured in that zone, the name of the district turned into Savaştepe in Republic Period.
