An examination of Nezihe Meriç's "I Know a Little Girl" series from the perspective of lexion

Words are expressions that form the overall structure of language. In order for an individual to effectively express themselves to the other person, they need to have sufficient vocabulary knowledge. Lexicon refers to the set of words belonging to a language. A significant portion of vocabulary is acquired during childhood. The influence of reading books at a young age on children's vocabulary is significant. Therefore, books written for children play a crucial role in Turkish language education. The aim of this study is to contribute to lexicon research by examining books written for children. The vocabulary elements in Nezihe Meriç's children's storybooks (I Know a Little Girl at Six, I Know a Little Girl at Seven, I Know a Little Girl at Eight, I Know a Little Girl at Nine, I Know a Little Girl at Ten, I Know a Little Girl at Eleven, I Know a Little Girl at Twelve) were identified. The research consists of five sections. The first section provides information about the conceptual framework. The elements of vocabulary are explained. The second section includes existing studies in this field. The third section includes data collection and population. The fourth section focuses on Nezihe Meriç's life, works, and literary personality. Summaries of the analyzed storybooks are included. In the fifth section the findings are presented and interpreted using tables. The research employed the qualitative research method of document analysis. Vocabulary elements were identified by indexing, tabulated, and interpreted in terms of their contribution to the field. Nezihe Meriç's book series "I Know a Little Girl" is at a level that meets the needs, excluding proverbs, terms, and slang expressions. It was concluded that the analyzed storybooks have rich content in terms of basic vocabulary and idioms, which would contribute to children's vocabulary acquisition.
