The effect of i'm racing by reading activity on middle school students' reading achievements and attitudes

The aim of this study is to develop a new application to increase the reading achievement and attitudes of secondary school students. The effect of "I Race by Reading" activity, designed for this purpose, on secondary school students' reading comprehension achievement and attitudes towards reading was examined. The quasi-experimental model was used in the research. The study was carried out with the 5th grade students at Seyitömer Secondary School in the Central district of the city of Kütahya during the 2018-2019 academic year. The implementation period of the study lasted 8 weeks. In the process of data collection, pre-test of "Reading-Comprehension Test and Reading Attitude Scale" was first applied to the experimental and control groups before the implementation. In the experimental group, the lessons were conducted using the "I Race by Reading" activity while the lessons were conducted in the control group according to the Turkish Teaching Curriculum. Reading-Comprehension Test and Reading Attitude Scale were used as data collection tool. According to the findings obtained from the study, the experimental group, in which the reading practice was conducted with "I Race by Reading" activity, was more successful in comprehending compared to the control group. There was also a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group from the reading comprehension test. Again according to the research findings, it was seen that there was a significant difference between the post-test mean scores of both groups from the Reading Attitude Scale. As a result, it is revealed that "I Race by Reading" activity is a practice that can be used in reading education.
