Estimation of wave run-up on bermed coastal structures

Abstract (EN)

The design of coastal protection structures depends on the wave run-up height, which can be defined as the vertical difference between the highest point of wave run-up on a coastal structure and the still water level. The wave run-up height is also an important parameter for determining the percentage of overtopping waves. In this study, for the cases of irregular and regular wave conditions; wave steepness, berm width, berm elevation and structure slope were determined as parameters of wave run-up. Physical model data were examined considering eight different models, two different wave conditions as irregular and regular waves, three different berm width and coastal structure without berm, two different slope, four different berm level and three different wave steepness for each berm level. Consequently, it was clearly understood that berm width and structure slope have effect on wave run-up height and percentage of overtopping waves. With the increase in berm width both wave run-up height and percentage of overtopping waves decrease. As structure slope increases, wave run-up height and percentage of overtopping waves increase. For the wave conditions considered, the wave run-up height and the percentage of overtopping wave values decrease in case of regular waves when compared to the case of irregular waves.
