The relationship between pediatric nurses' humanistic care skills and family-centered care

In the care practices of pediatric nurses, it is extremely important that pediatric nurses use humane emotions and that families participate in the care of the child. In this study conducted descriptively, the relationship between the humanistic care practice skills of nurses and their attitudes towards family-centered care was examined. The data were collected from nurses working at Aksaray Training and Research Hospital between 20.09.2022 and 31.12.2022 by using the Personal Information Form, Humanistic Behavior Skill Scale and Family-Centered Care Attitude Scale in Nursing Practices (n=270). The normality of the data was determined with the assumption of multiple normality. Descriptive statistics, reliability analyses, Pearson correlation coefficient, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equality modelling were used in the analyses. The average score of nurses' humanistic care scale was obtained as 119,9±13,72, the average score of family-centered care attitude was obtained as 4,3±0,43. Correlation coefficients between scales are meaningful (p<0.001). According to structural equality modelling, women have 15 times more humanistic behavior skills than men (β1=0,145). As the number of patients cared for per day increases, humanistic skill decreases by 15 times (β1=-0,147). A one-unit increase in nurses' humanistic care skills increased family- centered care attitudes by 59 times (β1=0,585). These variables explain the family-centered care attitudes in the proportion of 44% (Adj. R2=0,439). The findings showed that women have more humanistic skills and the higher number of patients cared for negatively affects humanistic care. In addition, as humanistic care skill increases, familycentered care attitude also increases significantly. Supporting nurses to increase their humanistic and family-centered care skills and it is recommended to reduce the number of patients per nurse. Keywords: Family-Centered Nursing, Humanism, Pediatric.
