Abstract (EN)

This study examines tradesmen and professions in Trabzon according to the Annuaire Oriental du Commerce. The study covers the years 1881-1914. The first section addresses the commercial and professional infrastructure of Trabzon. Information is provided on the city's history, administrative structure and population. The import and export flow of the Trabzon port in the last quarter of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century is examined and the commercial potential of the port is seen. Finally, this section provides the changes and transformations in the professional structure of Trabzon along with increasing commercial activities and modernization. The second section examines the main actors in trade in Trabzon, such as merchants, brokers and carriers. New commercial entrepreneurs and institutions in Trabzon in the 19th century are discussed. In the last section of the study, the tradesmen class, which had an important place in the city economy as in every Ottoman city, is mentioned and the profile of the tradesmen is drawn. Traditional and new professions in Trabzon in the 19th century are examined. The activities of two professional groups in the city were also mentioned. In addition, the owners of shops, stores and workshops in the city during this period were given. Professions and specialties such as doctors, pharmacists and lawyers, which increased with modern life in Trabzon, were examined. In general, the economy and commercial life of Trabzon were evaluated in the study through the tradesmen and professions in the city.
