Abstract (EN)
This study investigates the damage potential of low-rise buildings exposed to floods and flow-type landslides, which are typically triggered by heavy rainfall and often involve high-density flows and impact loads from floating debris. Unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings and low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) frames, which are prevalent throughout European cities, are particularly vulnerable to these hazards. The study first examines the collapse potential of URM buildings, which tend to collapse completely due to the failure of load-bearing walls under extreme lateral flow loads. It then evaluates and compares the damage potential of two RC frame design categories, earthquake-resistant and gravity load-designed structures, using rotation- and drift-based damage state definitions. This assessment is conducted by developing damage fragility surface curves, generated through incremental flow analyses on validated structural models, followed by modeling these curves using logistic regressions. These curves incorporate key uncertainties in both hazard and structural modeling, thereby providing reliable predictions for diverse flow conditions. In addition to offering a robust framework for predicting structural responses and damage levels under extreme flow conditions, the proposed fragility models provide critical insights for various stakeholders aiming to optimize design and retrofitting strategies to reduce damage in low-rise buildings subjected to flood and flow-induced landslide hazards.
