The Transcription of Şemseddin Sami's French-Turkisch Dictionary Called "Küçük Kamus-ı Fransevi"

Abstract (EN)

Dictionaries are very important while learning a new language. Hundreds of dictionaries have been written from Divanü Lügati't-Türk up to now. As far as these dictionaries take place from Turkish to Turkish; from Turkish to a foreign language; from a foreign language to Turkish or both from Turkish to foreign language and foreign language to Turkish. Moreover; it is about poetic and prose, both type of word has been written. All of these dictionaries have great importance for our cultural life. Until from the acceptance of Islam for Karahan State and The Rescript of Gülhane in 1839, Arabic and Persian had been the most prepared dictionaries. After 1839 west languages supplanted these languages. French and English were the principal languages which had the most prepared dictionaries. It is found that more than fifty dictionaries record which were from French to Ottoman Turkish and from Ottoman Turkish to French in catalog scanning between the rescript of Gülhane and the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey. The work we will analyze is the dictionary, which is the 7+651+5 pages from French to Ottoman Turkish of the great linguist Şemsettin Sami. In this work French - Turkish and Turkish-French dictionaries prepared between 1839-1923 will be briefly introduced. After that Şemsettin Sami's dictionary which is called " Küçük Kamus-i Fransevi" will be transcribed in full text. Key words: French, Küçük Kamus-ı Fransevi, dictionary, Şemsettin Sami, Turkish.
