Non-muslims in Adıyaman from Tanzimat to the Republic (Behisni, Hısnımansur, Kâhta, Gerger, Samsat)

Ottoman state has a cosmopolitian structure in which different language, religion and ethnic components had lived together. Non-Muslims in the Ottoman state, had ruled with "millet system" in which they were classified according to their religion and sects. In this study, the non-Muslims (Armenians and Syrians) in Adıyaman during the period between the Tanzimat Edict (1839) and the proclamation of the Republic (1923) were discussed. Within the scope of the study, the places where non-Muslims live, their population structures, their economic and religious lives are examined. In addition, the Armenian events that took place in the city in 1895, the implementation of the law of relocation and resettlement and the developments in social life were emphasized. Thus, the situation of non-Muslims in Adıyaman has been tried to be revealed as a whole. The main source of the study was Ottoman archive documents. Apart from archive documents, Diyarbekir and Mamuretülaziz provincial yearbooks, Hısnımansur and Behisni court records and copyrighted works, articles and theses on non-Muslims have also been utilized. There is no seperate study on non-Muslims in Adıyaman. Therefore, it is aimed that the study will fill the gap on this subject and contribute to the history of Adıyaman.
