Immigrates from Yugoslavia to Turkey (1923-1960)

The Balkans has been home to various peoples for centuries. That almost all nations wanted to dominate over this region, which is complex in terms of its religious, ethnic structure and geography. This created an atmosphere of constant struggle. The Turks first known entrance to the Balkans was in the 4th and 5th centuries.The Ottomans conquered the Balkans and transfered Turkomans to Turkify the region. A considerable number of Turks were placed to Yugoslavia. However, with the weakening of the Ottoman dominance over the Balkans, many Turks were forced to move to the motherland. The 1877-1878 and Balkan wars were very important in the movement of Turks to Turkey from the Balkans. With the removel of the Ottoman Empire from Yugoslavia, those Turks who had been left behind were exposed to much pressure and were obliged to migrate. About 108.000 people immigrated to Turkey within the first ten years following the proclamation of Turkish Republic. This immigration continued and in 1960 it reached up to 270.000. These immigrant, very few of them were placed by support from the Goverment. Immigrants from Yugoslavia were placed in different parts of Turkey for several reasons.
