Effects of approaches to colic and some characteristics of parents of having colic infants between 0-12 months

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted as a descriptive study in order to determine effects of approaches to colic and some characteristics of parents of having colic infants between 0-12 months. The study was carried out between 01 March 2018-31 June 2018 dates with the mothers and infants who had colic between 0-12 months registered in Family Health Centers of Kırşehir Health Directorate. Data were obtained by face-to-face interview technique using Parent-Infant Information Form and Infant Colic Scale (ICS). Data were analyzed by t test and One-way Anova test for independent samples. Written permission was obtained before starting the study. In the study, it was determined that the mean score of the infant colic scale of the mothers was 55.9 ± 12.0. Colic is seen more in the babies of mothers who have colic in their other children, grandmother who takes care of the baby, who do not use bottle and leave some foods with the thought that makes gas (p<0.05). Behavioural methods used to reduce colic were determined as removing gas of the baby with 88.9%, taking on one's lap with 81.7%, shaking the baby on the lap with 79.8% to lap and abdominal massage with 65.8%. Food and beverages left by mothers during this period were determined as legumes with 40.6%, coffee with 26.2% and spices with 14.4%. As a result; the mother should pay attention to the way of feeding, not to smoke at home, feeding the baby by breastfeeding, the baby should be comforted by behavioural methods and spending of the time period of the mother and baby should be increased. It should be noted that there is no direct treatment of colic but the negative effects of colic on both infant and family can be alleviated. It may be advisable to inform families and raise awareness of them on that this process should be calm and smooth. Key Words: Infantile Colic, Baby, Parent's Behaviours, Nursing
