Abstract (EN)
This thesis explores the main reasons behind human mobility since 1500, focusing on the different regional effects of various economic, political, social, and geographic factors. The initial cross-country analysis highlights the significant impact of geographic elements and historical influences on migration. The bilateral data structure in the second analysis allowed us to examine the effects in both source and destination countries at the same time, along with bilateral factors. Three main conclusions emerged from this study. First, migration is influenced by both source and destination countries, requiring an origin-destination framework for accurate historical migration assessment. Second, analyzing deep-rooted factors at the regional level provides more accurate results, as shown by the differences between the Eurasia and Sub-Saharan Africa regions. A global analysis might lead to biased results. Lastly, historical migrations were shaped by complex economic, political, and geographic influences in unique ways. Although often used as natural experiments in economic analysis, colonial migrations are affected by a complex network of factors and need to be considered carefully.
