Abstract (EN)

1840 Temettuat registers made following the Imperial Edict of Reorganisation give important informations about the near past. In addition to one's wealth, income and taxes; names of household's heads, their titles, occupations and information about others living in the house were recorded in the books. At the beginning population censuses had an economic aim and were held to determine the taxpayers but later on used to de-termine manpower for the army. In this study, Temettuat and population register books of Alidemirci, Bengiler, Çamavşarı, Doğanlar, Habibler, Kayalar, Kadıhisar, Mancılık, Orhanlar and Yaylacık villages of Balya district were used as well as the field study to define the socio-economic frame of the area. This thesis consists of two main chapters. The first chapter contains the physical appearences of the head of the household and male population of the house, their fat-her's names, ages, occupations, if registered, their titles and epiphets. As a result of the evaluations made with tables and graphics, the demographic structure of the people of the region and the occupational characteristics that are shaped by their economic activi-ties have been reached. In the second chapter economical evaluations were made using the data on regis-tered farmlands and orchards, olive cultivation, livestock registered in the house, immo-vables as well as their income and taxes paid. Keywords: The Imperial Edict of Reorganisation, Temettuât Censuses, Population Registers, Balya District, Social and Economic status.
