Investigation of the relationship between parental communication and social skills of 48-72 month old children

This study was conducted in order to examine the correlation between parental communication and social skills of 48-72-month-old children. Within the framework of this main purpose, it was investigated whether the relationship between 48-72-month-old preschool children's communication with their parents and their social skills differed depending on some demographic variables such as the child's age, gender, number of siblings, birth order, duration of kindergarten attendance, and parents' education level. The sample of the study, which was a relational survey model, consisted of 394 mothers and 26 teachers of 394 children aged 48-72 months who were attending four official independent kindergartens affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in Gölbaşı district of Ankara province in the spring semester of 2023-2024. "General Information Form", Mother-Father-Child Communication Assessment Tool (ABÇİDA) and Preschool Social Skills Assessment Scale (OSBED) Teacher Form were used as data collection tools. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20 program. According to the results of the study, it was determined that there was a significant difference in the parental communication skill scores of 48-72-month-old children in the study group depending on the variables of the number of children in the family, birth order and kindergarten attendance period (p<0.05), and there was a significant difference in their social skills scores depending on the variables of age, kindergarten attendance period and parental education level (p<0.05). No relationship was observed between children's parental communication and social skills.
