Abstract (EN)
OBJECTIVE: In our study, correlation between vitamin D level and type of fracture was invastigated for patients with osteoporotic fractures who are 55 years and older. There are many literatures that contain correlate between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of osteoporotic fractures. However, the type of fracture was not associated with vitamin D deficiency. If this correlation performe we could emphasize benefits of vitamin D treatment for prevention of advenced type of fracture. Thus we have achieved significant gains for provide advenced types of fractures will lead mortality, morbidity and surgical difficulties. METERIAL AND METHOD: This study were performed between 03/01/2012 and 01/03/2014 among male and female patients with osteoporotic fractures who are 55 years and older that admitted to that Adnan Menderes University Medical Faculty Hospital of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Clinic. The main purpose of our study was investigate correlation between vitamin D deficiency and fracture type for patients with osteoporotic fracture. For this purpose, osteoporotic fractures of long bones and measured vitamin D levels were evaluated in 52 patients. Criteria for inclusion in our research was over the age of 55, being exposed to low-energy trauma and has become osteoporotic fractures of long bones. Classifications of fracture types were performed from radiographs that were typed according to the AO Müller classification system. Vitamin D levels were divided into three groups. If vitamin D level is below 20 ng/ml deficiency, between 20-30 ng/ml insufficient, above 30 ng/ml normal was considered. Chi-square test was used for Vitamin D measurements grouped according to the type of fracture. The level of statistical significance was determined as p <0.05. RESULTS: A total of 52 patients (10 male, 42 female) with osteoporotic fracture were included in the study. There was a single bone fractures in each patient. The mean age was 73.7 years (55-87 years). In 5 patients, vitamin D level was >30 ng/ml (%9,6). In 8 patients, vitamin D level was 20-30 ng/ml (%15,4). In 39 patients, vitamin D level was <20 ng/ml (%75). 32 of 52 patients have type A fractures (61.5%) and other 20 patients have type B (38.5%) fractures. In our patients, p-value between vitamin D levels and types of fracture was found to be 0.142. This was not statistically significant (p>0,05). Small number of patients may be most important reason. In our patients, the absence of any C type fractures were associated to fracture that occurred low-energy trauma. CONCLUSION: P-value was more than 0.05 in the correlation between vitamin D levels and types of fractures. This also showed that there was no statistically significant between vitamin D levels and types of fractures in patients with osteoporotic fractures. In our opinion, this study has several limitations that was limited number of cases.
