Fruit and vegetable production potential and current status of processing facilities in Afyonkarahisar

Afyonkarahisar is located in the Inner Western Anatolia region of the Aegean Region and is characterized by its fertile agricultural areas, which contribute to a good level of fruit and vegetable production. The study focused on examining 18 fruit and vegetable processing facilities in Afyonkarahisar using a survey method. Before conducting the survey, a comprehensive field research was conducted on the potential of fruit and vegetable cultivation in the city, utilizing official sources and statistical literature. Subsequently, the study delved into the production status of the facilities. The prepared questionnaire covered various aspects, including the distribution of facilities according to districts, distance from settlement areas, establishment dates, installed capacities, personnel status, international quality certifications, methods of raw material sourcing, processing techniques, capacity utilization rates, and the evaluation methods for products and waste generated in the facilities. Based on the survey results, it was determined that the majority of employees in the fruit and vegetable processing facilities in Afyonkarahisar are between the ages of 35 and 45 and have completed primary education. The ratio of male to female workers in the facilities was found to be balanced. All facilities possess national and international quality certifications. The facilities operate at capacities ranging from 40% to 90%. The majority of the raw materials used are sourced from products grown within the boundaries of Afyonkarahisar, and a significant portion of the produced goods is intended for export. Waste generated in the facilities is properly managed through recycling facilities. Two facilities were found to have no production-related issues, while the common problems among the other facilities include the unavailability of standard raw materials due to changing climatic conditions, high raw material prices, the presence of foreign substances and residues carried by low-quality raw materials, as well as energy and other input costs. This study demonstrates the significant potential of Afyonkarahisar province in terms of fruit and vegetable cultivation, processing facilities, and exports. It is anticipated that the sector will become even more promising in the future. Efforts in this field, accompanied by new investments, will contribute to the advancement of both cultivation and processing in the fruit and vegetable sector. The objectives include ensuring quality raw materials, improving working conditions, increasing employment opportunities, and achieving reliable food production, thereby making a contribution to the national economy.
