Investigation of nasal carriage of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in humans and animals in afyonkarahisar

Abstract (EN)

In the present study, nasal carriage rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in human and cattle close contact with humans and the resistance rates of MRSA isolates against to various antibiotics were investigated by using molecular techniques for the first time in Afyonkarahisar. The nasal carriage rates of MRSA in sampled 150 humans (85 women, 65 men) and 250 cattle (175 female, 75 male) were determined as 8.7% (n=13) and 1.2% (n=3), respectively. MRSA strains isolated from humans and animals were not supplied from sampled same household. Therefore, it was considered that transmission was not been between humans and animals. All of 13 MRSA isolates obtained from humans were resistant against to cefoxitin and penicillin G. High resistance rates were determined against to clindamycin (46.1%), kanamycin (46.1%), mupirocin (46.1%), erythromycin (38.5%), fusidic acid (38.5%), oxacillin (38.5%), tetracycline (38.5%) and vancomycin (38.5%) in isolates, too. The resistance against to cefoxitin, clindamycin, erythromycin, fusidic acid, mupirocin, oxacillin, penicillin G, rifampicin, teicoplanin and vancomycin were determined in all of 3 MRSA isolates isolated from cattle nasal swab samples.
