Abstract (EN)
In this work, we have tried to detect words borrowed from the French language into the Turkish. In the first chapter, we have aimed to highlight the definitions of the term borrowing and its classifications based on the findings of linguists; namely, Emile Benveniste, Antoine Meillet, Joseph Vendryes, Charles Barbier, Arsene Darmesteter and Albert Dauzat. Then, we have continued with the interaction between the two languages, French and Turkish, during their historical course. After determining the areas in which the borrowed words appeared, we have categorized these borrowings. As for the second chapter, we have struggled to show the semantic changes the words underwent based on their frequency. We tried to give examples of the most common words in daily usage. In this chapter, we have also introduced examples for word types such as calques, hybrid words, non-existing words in French, and words that changed by grammatical category when they were borrowed into Turkish. In the last chapter, we have found phonetic changes by comparing the phonetic signifiers of words in both languages. With the help of the examples gathered from dictionaries, we have categorized the borrowed words according to their phonetic changes.
