The effect of antenatal education on mothers breastfeeding self -eefficacy and breastfeeding success

Objective: To determine the validity and reliability of Antenatal and Postnatal Breastfeeding Self- Efficacy Short Form scales and to determine the effect of Dennis and Pender based antenatal breastfeeding education on mothers breastfeedıng self -eeffıcacy and breastfeedıng successMethod: This research was performed in two stage. First stage, validity and reliability of scales. It was performed in hospitals in Izmir that are related to Health Minestry and in one privite hospital. Antenatal scale was performed to 144 pregnant women, Postnatal scale was performed to 150 Postnatal mothers. For validity translation, known-group and predictive validity analysis were used. The reliability was evaluated by interitem correlations and Cronbach?s alpha coefficient methods. The second stage was quasi-experimentel and it was performed in Altındağ No:7 Mother Child Health and Family Planing Center. In Postnatal 1. and 6. weeks 41 experimental and 41 control pregnants that rececived breastfeeding education were evaluated about breastfeedıng self-eeffıcacy and breastfeedıng sucess. For evaluating breastfeedıng self?eeffıcacy repeated variance analysis, for evaluating breastfeedıng success unpaired and paired sample t test was used. The relationship of breastfeedıng self?eeffıcacy and breastfeedıng success was evaluated witih correlation analysisResults: First stage, Cronbach?s alpha coefficient of antenatal scale is 0.87, Postnatal scale is 0.86. Second Stage: There was a significant statistical difference between Postnatal 1. and 6 weeks breastfeeing success among experimental and control group (p=0.00, p=0.036) There was olso significant statistical difference within groups in Postnatal 1. and 6 week (p=0.004; p=0.00). Breastfeedıng self ?eeffıcacy was evaluated related to group, group*time and time factor, there was significant statistical difference related to all of factors. Related to time factor advanced analysis was done and was not found any significant statistical difference between after education and Postnatal 1. week breastfeedıng self ?eeffıcacy resultsConclusion: Antenatal and Postnatal Breastfeeding Self- Efficacy Short Form scales are valide and reliabile fo using in Turkish culture. The breastfeedıng self-effıcacy and breastfeedıng success are improved to breastfeeding education based on Dennis and Pender.
