Effect of the Jigsaw I technique applied in the education of acid-base unit on the students' academic achievements

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of cooperative learning technique (Jigsaw I) compared to the traditional teaching method on their academic achievements for acid-base teaching of the fresher at the general chemistry course, and to determine the students' opinions about the jigsaw technique. Sample of the study is constituted from 44 fresher attending Science Education Discipline at the Education Faculty of Inonu University in the 2012-2013 academic year. In the study, test group (N=20) and control group students (N=24) were random determined. General Chemistry Prior Knowledge Test which is consisting of 25 questions and Acid-Base Achievement Test (ABAT) used as pre-test and post-test, which is consisting of 20 questions, Jigsaw Opinion Scale (JOS) were used as tools for data collection. Descriptive statistics and t- test were utilised in the analysis of the data obtained by the study. At the end of the study, it was concluded that when compared to the traditional method, Jigsaw I technique is much effective on the teaching of acid-base unit as to increase the academic achievement.
