Abstract (EN)

Transportation is the process of moving people from one place to another and goods from one location to another. It has been an important concept throughout history, evolving and gaining speed with technological advancements. Initially, transportation was achieved by walking or using horse-drawn carriages, but it diversified and accelerated over time. The Industrial Revolution marked a significant milestone in transportation, as it necessitated the development of efficient transportation systems due to the increased use of raw materials and production of goods. The concentration of large numbers of people in cities also contributed to spatial expansion, which became meaningful with the development of urban transportation. The easy movement of people and goods is crucial for the functionality of cities, as it creates settlements where happy individuals reside. This study focuses on examining urban transportation from the perspective of residents in the city of Balıkesir. The aim is to find solutions to existing problems, generate new ideas, and create living conditions that satisfy people's expectations and make them happier. Particularly in planning, programming, and regulating the city's transportation systems, the attitudes of local residents and their frequency and preferences in using transportation vehicles should be taken into account. This study is conducted from a perceptual or behavioral perspective. The perception of the public was determined through surveys (400 surveys) and evaluated using statistical methods. The results indicate that public transportation, especially buses, is the primary mode of transportation in Balıkesir. Commuting to work and school is the most common reason for using transportation. Survey participants have expressed negative views regarding traffic accidents, the use of sidewalks, compliance with rules in roundabouts, and transportation fees. In this context, suggestions such as providing fare refunds based on transportation routes, implementing a common fare deduction when boarding public transportation vehicles, and installing refund machines at disembarkation points can be proposed. This way, the distance between the embarkation and disembarkation points can be calculated, the appropriate fare can be collected, and the remaining amount can be refunded to the cards. Additionally, the concept of a The Public Transportation Center (TTM) can be extended to other areas of the city. These practices can expedite travel and enable individuals to save time and costs.
