The effect of 12-week endurance training on antioxidant levels in basketball players

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study was to examine free radical production of endurance trainings applied on basketball players and effects of antioxidant parameters which body constitutes defensive mechanism against free radicals. There were 13 Bartın University women basketball team players whose mean ages were 21.12±0.64 year, mean heights were 162.25±2.12 cm, and mean weights were 58.12±3.48 kg voluntarily participated this study. To measure antioxidant levels, one samplepre, middle and post test model was used. Training program including 8 weeks incessant running and 4 weeks repeatitive running was used in this study. Data showed that there decreased between pre SOD values and middle SOD values. MDA results indicated that pre MDA values statistically significant increased according to middle and post MDA values, and there was a significant decrease between middle and post MDA values(p<0.05). Even GSH values were decreased and CAT values were increased, these values are not statistically significant(p>0.05). Additionally, There was no significant difference in ALT and AST liver enzyme values, in CK enzyme value was found statistically significant increase. As a conclusion; 12 weeks endurance training applied on basketball players increased antioksidant production. Initial weeks of exercise, decreasing of SOD and GSH was used for coping with oxidants and increasing of CAT activities improved antioxidant capacities of exercise. Used antioxidants caused decreasing of MDA and they prevented lipid peroxidation.
