Evaluation of preservice physical education and sports teachers' beliefs about their profession: Sample of Şirnak University

The aim of this study is to examine the beliefs of physical education and sports teacher candidates studying at Şırnak University, School of Physical Education and Sports, towards the profession of physical education and sports teacher. Ethics Committee Permission required for conducting the study was obtained in writing from Hitit University Non-Interventional Research Ethics Committee. An informed consent form was signed by the students who voluntarily participated in the study. SPSS 22.0 package program was used for statistical analysis of the obtained data. The research was carried out in the relational screening model and the data obtained were created by Fan, Keating, Liu, Zhou, Shangguan and Knipe (2018; Doğru, Kamuk and Yılmaz (2019) adapted the Turkish version of the "Belief Scale for the Profession of Physical Education and Sports Teaching", which was developed to measure the beliefs of Physical Education and Sports teacher candidates about the teaching profession, and collected with a personal information form. The scale is 7-point Likert type. It consists of two sub-dimensions, 'sense of calling' and 'value of physical education and sport', and twelve items. 130 (41 female and 89 male) students studying in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching at Şırnak University School of Physical Education and Sports in the 2021-2022 academic year participated in the research. As a result, the professional beliefs of physical education and sports teacher candidates and the variables of class level, academic achievement, residence unit where they lived for the longest time, average income level of the family, education level of the mother, working status of the mother and father, being a licensed athlete and the class of sports branch. However, it was concluded that there was a significant difference between the professional beliefs of physical education and sports teacher candidates, gender (in the dimension of the value of physical education and sports) and the educational status of the father (in the dimension of sense of calling the profession).
