Abstract (EN)
Introduction: The Covid-19 pandemic, which started in China in December 2019 and became a global problem, has started a process that affects almost all countries and people of the world. The thought that the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused many changes from consumption habits to preferences, could be "prevented" only with cleaning, distance and mask at first, has evolved into the fact that a fourth actor is needed as the pandemic spreads rapidly and effectively. In a very short time, normal vaccines and mRNA vaccines that support the increase of antibodies have been introduced to the market by the leading countries in this process and their use has been promoted around the world in parallel with their effectiveness. Despite the fact that different campaigns and incentive processes have been implemented in dozens of different countries, unfortunately, the opposition to vaccines has led to the disruption of collective solution mechanisms. Of course, there are many reasons, factors and parameters of vaccine opposition. However, in this study, we aimed to analyze the basic dynamics of anti-vaccination in the context of demographic characteristics by making a reading on the thoughts of the parents of the patients who applied to the Bezmialem Vakıf University Medical Faculty Hospital Pediatrics Polyclinics on the application of the Covid-19 vaccine to their children. Materials and Methods: The Vaccine Opposition Scale-SCA form, translated into Turkish by Kılınçarslan et al., (2020), was included in the sample group as long and short forms, in order to evaluate the opinions of the parents of the patients who applied to the Bezmialem Vakıf University Medical Faculty Hospital Pediatrics Polyclinics. has been applied. SCA was evaluated by scaling (grading) between 1 and 5 points, based on the answers to the questions asked to the participants. The scale of "Parents' Thoughts on the Administration of Covid-19 Vaccine to Children" was used for the data of the research. As the scoring on this scale increases, it is evaluated as increasing the anti-vaccination/hesitation. A face-to-face survey was conducted with 397 parents between the ages of 18-75, based on demographic characteristics and evaluating a total of 47 questions. During the initial evaluation of the data, the Shaprio wilk test was examined. While parents divided into 2 independent groups were evaluated as having normal distribution with the Student's T test, Mann Whiney u test was used to compare the characteristics that were not normally distributed in 2 independent groups. However, Kruskal Wallis test and Dunn Multiple Comparison Test were used as the best for One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and LSD Multiple Comparison Tests. Qualitative variables were evaluated with the Chi-square test. In this context, SPSS Windows Version 24.0 package program was used. Findings: In the study, 397 parents between the ages of 18-75 were selected as a sample group. While 112 (28.2%) of the sample group were mothers, 285 (71.8%) were mothers. The mean age of the parents is 36.64±5.75, and the average age of the children is 7.69±3.99. 53.7% of the children are girls and 46.3% are boys. When the economic levels of the families are examined; 35 (8.8%) have a good income, 320 (80.6%) have a medium income and 42 (10.6%) have a bad income. Other features are as indicated in the table. Of the individuals participating in the study, 219 (55.2%) had Covid-19, 96 (24.2%) children had Covid-19, and 24 (6%) children died. While 66 (16.6%) of them were hospitalized due to Covid-19 in their families, 27 (6.8%) had their families died due to Covid-19. It was observed that 275 (69.3%) of the participants regularly took their children to the pediatrician, 386 (97.2%) had their children vaccinated by the Ministry of Health, and 169 (42.6%) had their children specially vaccinated. In the evaluation of Vaccine Opposition Scale scores, significant differences were observed between the genders of the sample group and their SDL scores. Significantly lower values were observed in the SCD scores of men (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the SCD scores of the participants and their mother's education levels (p=0.016). As a result of post hoc evaluations using Dunn's test, significant decreases were observed in anti-vaccine scores as the education level increased (p<0.05). A similar relationship was observed between father's education level and SDL scores. It was observed that SDL scores of working mothers and families without consanguineous marriage were significantly lower (p<0.05). The responses of the participants to the proposition that "Covid-19 can be controlled with the vaccine" showed significant differences with their SCD scores (p<0). Especially the side effects of the vaccine, the dose and the question marks about whether it is necessary (to vaccinate) were effective. It was observed that those who were considering getting the Covid-19 vaccine were more frequently hospitalized due to Covid-19 in their families (p=0.019). Results: In our study, although the opinions of the patients who applied to the Pediatric Health and Diseases Polyclinics of the Bezmialem Vakif University Medical Faculty Hospital, from the perspective of the parents, about the administration of the Covid-19 vaccine to their children, came to the fore as the main parameters, our aim in general was to examine the demographic characteristics of the parents, their children, and their children. The aim was to evaluate the main reasons underlying the vaccine hesitancy based on SCD and to come up with a result in this context. As a result, it has been seen that different demographics have an effect on parents getting their children vaccinated, at least in the short term. Most of the time, hesitations regarding the type, dose, efficacy and post-processing of the vaccine were effective in this. As a result, parents, at least in our country, still have a great deal of doubt about vaccination and a lack of information about Covid-19. In this context, both incentives and campaigns for parents and their children, and practices accompanied by informative and effective training can help prevent vaccine hesitation.
