Abstract (EN)

Suez Canal having an important place in the world geography with respect to its geopolitic and geostrategic situation, was one of the places having struggles between the great powers during the First World War. By First Canal Campaign, which was proposed by Germany being an allied of the Ottoman Empire, the connection between England and its "life vein" India would have been cut of. As a result, the English soldiers would have been blocked in the area and hence the situation of Germany and its allies would have been easier in European fronts. Before the Ottoman Empire entered the war, Zeki Pasha being responsible for the area had been warned by the vice Commander-in-Chief Enver Pasha that the war would have been declared against England and he had been asked for the preparation for a possible campaign to Suez Canal. Zeki Pasha notified Istanbul that such a campaign would be unsuccesful due to inadequate material and soldiers. Zeki Pasha was taken off the duty by Enver Pasha since he did not support the campaign and the Commander of the Naval Division Cemal Pasha was charged for the position. Cemal Pasha completed the preparation when he arrived to the area. The forces moved for the campaign on December 14, 1914. During the 2 and 3rd February nights, the Turkish forces attacting to the canal had been opposed by a strong English force and they had to recede.
