Birzali (ö.739/1339) and his place in the science hadith

The Mamluks were a Turkish state that held significant importance in Islamic history. This period was notably prolific in terms of Islamic sciences. Birzālī was a renowned Islamic scholar who lived in Damascus during the Mamluk era, known for his expertise in history and hadith studies. Numerous authors have referred to him with the title "the scholar of hadith and history of Damascus." He taught in Dār al-ḥadīth institutions, delivered hadith lessons in scholarly gatherings, and established mentor-student as well as amicable relationships with many prominent figures of his time. It is reported in various sources that Birzālī possessed profound knowledge in the field of rijāl (narrator evaluation), and that he provided remarkably detailed information about the scholars of his era and their teachers. This study focuses on Birzālī's life and his contributions to the science of hadith. It examines the period in which he lived, his biography, and his scholarly contributions to hadith. Furthermore, his role in samāʿ (auditory transmission) sessions is analyzed. Based on an examination of his accessible works, this research aims to shed light on Birzālī's knowledge and expertise in the field of rijāl by analyzing the information he provides on narrators.
