Abstract (EN)

The mechanical losses occured within the engine, the cam mechanism, crank rod mechanism and the other mechanisms creates a significant portion of the total losses. Hence, the engine's lubricating oil used in cam and crank rod mechanism and the other mechanisms is very important criteria for efficiency and motor performance. In order to improve the performance characteristics of lubricating oils, some additives have been added to the base oil used in the field of motors and industrial machines. In recent years, the use of boron compounds as additives have been increasing. In this study, the effects of the boron compounds on lubrication oils was investigated in the test apparatus. For this purpose; base oils containing two types of boron compound were studied at different concentrations. The results were evaluated taking into account on forming a tribo film in boundary or mixed lubrication conditions. As a result of this study; the experiments showed that boron compounds reduced the coefficient of friction from 10% to 50%, under different test conditions. The optimum concentration ratio has been determined for boric acid of 3%, for hexagonal boron nitride of 4%. Experiments were also carried out for both of optimum concentration ratios using a 170 KW diesel engine. At the end of the experiments, a decrease of 3.6% and 2.7% in the fuel consumption, thanks to boric acid and boron nitride additives, was observed, respectively.
