Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted for the purpose of revealing C. Guatelli's understanding of polyphone for Turkish musical works, shedding light on pre-Republic period polyphony with the determined understanding, and revealing the role assumed by C. Guatelli in this process in musical terms. To this end, C. Guatelli's musical life in the period from his arrival to Ottoman Empire territories to his death, his works, and his services for the Ottoman State have been studied and the seventeen works in actual Turkish music form, which C. Guatelli performed the polyphone for the piano, have been analyzed. The Survey method, which is a descriptive research method, was employed in the study and the "Content Analysis" method was utilized in data collection. The "Work Analysis and Evaluation Scale" were developed in line with expert opinions. Descriptive calculations such as percentage and frequency were calculated using the SPSS 20 package program in the analysis of the data.In the study, it was concluded that C. Guatelli did not determine a certain mode in the polyphony of musical work, however, he did generally include Hijaz scales, he mostly changed mode related elements, adhered to form structures, acted in line with the requirement of the mode regarding the formation of the tonal structure, he was inconsistent in forming tonal structures, he preferred tone and independent structures concerning accompaniment, and he did not act in accordance with the musical movements of his century. Furthermore, findings were obtained on C. Guatelli speeding-up the interaction of the Turkish people with western music in his works and laid the foundation for musical initiatives in the Republic period by means of the students he trained.
